The ‘Atlas Maritimus & Commercialis’ is usually attributed to Edmond Halley who contributed the prefatory note detailing the use of the charts. These were based on a new globular form of projection improving on that of Mercator. Daniel Defoe is also believed to have been a contributor. The author of the sailing directions and associated text was Nathaniel Cutler who is often associated with the work.
