The first edition of this work compiled by Horance Walpole (1717-97) was published in 1763 and bore plates engraved by George Vertue (1684-1756). Walpole, the fourth Earl of Orford, was an author, politician and passionate about the arts. The first edition was printed by his own press called Strawberry Hill. A fascinating little bibliography.
