A fine early lithograph of a lawn tennis match from around 1880 by William MacKenzie. Real Tennis goes back centuries, but Lawn Tennis developed in the mid-1860s. During the 1870s it rapidly gained in popularity leading to the first Wimbledon Tournament in 1877. Whilst not identified as such, the grandstand is clearly that which was in place at Wimbledon at the time. The event was organised to raise funds for the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club to be able to repair a pony roller used on the lawns! Twenty-two men competed in that first tournament which attracted about 200 spectators. The winner was Spencer Gore. William MacKenzie was active as a publisher from 1866 to 1895. This view was included in some examples of the undated ‘British Field Sports’ by Henry Downes Miles.
