A very fine large-scale detailed chart of the south coast of Cornwall extending from Polkerris to the River Fowey. A large inset illustrates Mounts Bay and Penzance with a coastal profile from Coombe to Foy Castle at the entrance to the River Fowey. Several places are marked with profile buildings.

Gerard van Keulen (1678-1726) continued the business founded by his father Johannes van Keulen (1654-1715) around 1678 and expanded its reputation. Gerard set about replacing many of his father’s sea charts the first of which was published in 1698. An engraver in his own right, he was a skilled mathematician and cartographer. These skills were recognised in 1714 when he was named Hydrographer to the Dutch East India Company. This chart was published in ‘De Nieuwe Groote Ligtende Zee-Fakkel’, examples of which are usually composite in nature to meet the demands of the customer. Koeman (1967-70) Keu 71 no. 24, p.380 no. 291; Shirley (2004) M.Keu.2k 20; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
