This sea chart by Jacob Aertsz. Colom (1600-73) reverts to the earlier chart by Waghenaer in placing the Cherbourg peninsula in the centre of the map rather than on either side. It extends from ‘Treport’ in Normandy to ‘Benit’ (Binic) in Brittany. The Channel Islands are highlighted and placed correctly with the contemporary issue of an oversized ‘Ornay’ (Alderney). Portland Bill in Dorset is situated at the bottom of the chart. Colom was from Dordrecht and moved to Amsterdam in 1622. In 1632 he published the first edition of the folio pilot guide entitled ‘De Vyerighe Colom’. It’s title specifically highlighted the ‘errors and miscalculations’ of Blaeu’s contemporary work the ‘Zeespiegel’. It also didn’t help that his shop was on the same street as Blaeu’s house. So began a feud between them. Colom’s work was highly regarded and published for many years. Koeman listed the first example of this chart in an edition of 1668 however he did state that due to the lack of surviving examples, it may well have appeared earlier. Indeed, Ashley Baynton-Williams courtesy of Jason Hubbard, highlighted its presence in two earlier English editions of the ‘The New Fierie Sea-Columne’ dated 1640 in the Library of Congress (Phillips 3332) and 1649 at the British Library (Maps C.8.c.1). Provenance: David Bannister 1980s; private Jersey collection. Baynton-Williams, Ashley (2022) ‘Collation: Introduction to Jacob Aertsz. Colom’, in Map Forum 12th issue; Koeman IV (1967-70) J. Col. 29 no. 32 and J. Col 27; Phillips (1909-) 3332; Shirley (2004) M.Colm 1a.
