This rare overview map of the British Isles was published in Antoine du Pinet’s ‘Plantz, Pourtraitz et Descriptions …’ in 1564. The book drew on the cartography of more than one mapmaker, however this woodblock is taken from that of Sebastian Munster first published in 1550. It depicts an outline of the British Isles and apart from London and Edinburgh notes the cities of Dover, Oxford, and Waterford in Ireland. Wales is onnected to England by a narrow peninsula and Scotland is illustrated in the Ptolemy form slanted to the east. A rare map, it was not listed in the first edition of Shirley’s book listing maps of the British Isles. Provenance: Clive A. Burden Ltd.; private English collection. Pastoureau (1984) pp. 131-3 no. 10; Shirley (1991) 76a; Shirley (2004) T.DPIN 1a.
