“This is a new map, substantially in advance of any others printed hitherto’ (Shirley). Indeed when you consider that George Lily’s map of six years later is thought to be the first modern map of Great Britain, this map of England, Wales, southern Scotland and a portion of Ireland is remarkably advanced. Orientated with the east at the top it was first published in Sebastian Munster’s edition of Ptolemy’s ‘Geographia’ in Basle, 1540. Approximately 80 names are found, many for the first time. The origin of this information is unidentified. Shirley discusses the likelihood of the Gough map being the source but there are differences. Upper left there is a table of place names in Latin with their English equivalent. The Royal Standard flies over England and the Scottish flag is also found. The map was included in later editions of the ‘Geographia’ and Munster’s other work, the ‘Cosmography’, from 1552. Karrow (1993) 58/102b; Shirley (1991) no. 28.
