A fine decorative map of the American continent by Justus Danckerts which replaces his earlier map of c.1680. It is dated to c.1696 and almost immediately additional nomenclature was added to the coast of ‘Terra Esonis’ upper left. These are the result of earlier Dutch voyages. A third state was published c.1727 with the imprint of Reiner and Joshua Ottens. The cartography is derived largely from that of Frederick de Wit. In North America the two western lakes of Michigan and Superior are left open to the west. The Dutch still lay claim to New Netherlands. California is still illustrated as an island. A dominant Mississippi River is still omitted. In South America, the source of the Rio de la Plata is given as the mythical lake ‘Xarayes’ and in Brazil two vignettes of tribal scenes are present. The title appears lower left in a vignette scene of indigenous Americans highlighting the wealth of gold to be found.

Danckerts continued the family relationship with publishing. His grandfather Cornelis Danckerts (1561-1631) began as a printseller in Antwerp. His son, confusingly known as Cornelis the elder (1603-56), was a noted engraver of several maps. He had two sons, Dancker Danckerts (1634-66) and Justus Danckerts (1635-1701), both following in the business. Provenance: Juan and Peggy Rada Collection. Burden (1996-2007) nos. 527 & 725; Koeman (1967-70) vol. II pp. 88-91 Dan 3 no. 2 & vol. III pp. 85-6 & 89 no. 252; Leighly (1972) no. 91; McLaughlin & Mayo (1995) nos. 123 & 178; Phillips (1909-) nos. 522, 616 & 3470; Tooley (1964) no. 53.
