This separately published broadsheet illustrates the fierce and daring Dutch raid on the Medway where they fired on the laid up English Fleet and inflicted arguably the worst naval defeat in English history. No less than 15 ships were destroyed and 83 of the remaining were set alight. King Charles’ flagship the ‘Royal Charles’ was captured and taken to Holland. This occurred during the second Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-67. It features a map of the River Thames including much of Essex and Kent up to the city of London. It shows the positions of the Dutch and English fleet. An inset above left shows the Medway in detail from Rochester. There is extensive Dutch text below documenting the events of June 19th to 23rd, 1667. A second title below map reads ‘Kaerte van de Rivieren van London en Rochester of Chetham …’
