This particular index is to ‘the Essays, Dissertations, and Historical Passages’ in the first volume and to the ‘Poetical Articles, the Names of Persons, the Plates, and to the Books and Pamphlets’ from the years 1731 when the ‘Gentleman’s Magazine’ began to 1786. The highly influential magazine was published by Edward Cave who gave the then struggling SAMUEL JOHNSON (1709-84) his first major break. Provenance: with the bookplate of Captain Thomas Herbert of the Royal Navy.
