This chart of the waters around Tahiti comes from the official account of the First Voyage of the Pacific by Captain James Cook published in 1773. It is derived from the voyages of Commodore Byron (1764-66), Captain Wallis (1766-68) and Captain Carteret (1766-69). For the compilation of this work Hawkesworth received £6,000 from the Admiralty Shirley G.Hawk 1a no. 21.
