In 1762 the Royal Society of Arts announced a prize of 100 guineas for an accurate survey of any county. The first winner was Benjamin Donn (1729-98) for his map of the county of Devon. Published in 1765 it was the result of a five year survey which required measuring 6000 miles of roads and rivers etc. Donn was a surveyor and mathematician at Bideford, Devon. The first printed plan of Bristol was that of Braun & Hogenburg in 1581, the first printed in England was on the county map of John Speed first published in 1612. The first English map of Bristol alone was by James Millerd in 1670. In 1743 John Rocque published a four-sheet plan of Bristol in 1743 which was reduced in 1750 in a single sheet version. This plan by Donn was first published on 25 October 1773 and was followed by a second edition on l May 1778. Subsequently there was a third edition in 1782, fourth in 1784 and finally this fifth edition in 1791. An example has been traced in the Cambridge University Library. For this issue new streets and buildings are added with further additions to the key. The town is displayed in a grid pattern which enable the surrounds of the map to contain useful keys. The sides contain references to 82 places and this is continued to 88 along the very bottom of the image. Above that is an advert by Donn offering the map at his ‘Mathematical & Philosophical Academy, Bristol’, this goes on to offer a map of the country 11 miles round Bristol and various instruments. The price for this map is shown lower right at 1 shilling & 6 pence. The dedication cartouche upper left is to the ‘Booksellers of Bristol and Bath’. This example interestingly bears Donn’s initials on the verso ‘BD’. Tooley’s Dictionary; Worms and Baynton-Williams (2011).
