This map was first published in 1612 in John Speed’s ‘Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain’ and engraved by Jodocus Hondius. According to Shirley particular care was taken by Hondius on the general maps which are all full of detail and decoration. The map was prepared by 1610 as evidenced by the imprint date lower right and although the atlas is dated 1611 it does not appear to have been published until 1612. Cartographically the map draws on the Saxton of England and Wales of 1579, the Jodocus Hondius map of Ireland from 1591 and the Gerard Mercator map of Scotland of 1595. There are some improvements of geography notably the depiction of the Isle of Man. Towards the top of the map are two views of the cities of London and Edinburgh, two medallions are below both. Above them are the Royal Coat of Arms on the London and an inset map of the Orkney Islands derived from Mercator. Shirley 316; Skelton 10.
