A VERY RARE MAP by Robert Walton and Robert Morden. Walton (1618-88) was one of the more active London dealers in maps and prints although he is more known for the latter. His career began following the English Civil War. His maps are rarely issued in any formal book where they might be preserved and as a consequence are very rare and desirable. This map was first advertised in the ‘Term Catalogues’ in 1687 and provides a map of Scotland in the side panels of which may be found a general index to all placenames in the country. The title states that the map is the work of Robert Morden who has improved that of Robert Gordon’s map as issued in Joan Blaeu’s atlas. A table at the bottom identifies the counties within the country. A manuscript notation upper left records most likely the original asking price ’10d.’ The map is co-published with Robert Morden (fl.1669-1703) at a time when he was beginning to issue material under his own name. The map would be the model for Morden’s Scotland as it would appear in his hugely successful ‘Britannia’ published from 1695. Fleet, Wilkes and Withers p. 68; Moir I p. 174; Tyacke (1978); Worms & Baynton-Williams (2011).
