David Loggan’s ‘Oxonia Illustrata’ published in Oxford 1675 is generally considered one of the finest English engraved topographical works of the seventeenth. Loggan (1635-1700?) was born in Danzig and came to England about 1653. By 1665 he was living near Oxford and in 1669 was appointed engraver to the University. In the year the ‘Oxonia’ was published he married. This engraving is of the front of the Sheldonian Theatre named after the Chancellor of the University at the time Gilbert Sheldon. It is only the second building designed by Sir Christopher Wren after a Chapel built for his uncle Bishop of Ely at Pembroke College, Cambridge. It was built between 1664 and 1668.
