A lovely example of a very rare map by Francesco Ferretti. It comes from an equally rare Isolario entitled ‘Diporti Notturni Dialloghi Familliari del Capo Franco Ferretti’ first published in Ancona in 1580. The attractive maps depict the islands of the Mediterranean Sea in the traditional Isolario style. Each is set below a title and include radial lines and ornate border. This map of the Spanish Balearic island of Majorca does not at first glance appear to be recognisable but north in fact appears upper left and this slight rotation does make it easier to understand. The capital Palma is named ‘Maiorica’ and to its north the ancient settlement of Alcudia ‘Alichudia’ is also depicted. King p. 54; Shirley ‘Atlases in the British Library’ T.FRR 1a.
