This map by Tobias Conrad Lotter was engraved by him for his father-in-law Mattheus Seutter who first published it. Although like De L’Isle’s important plan of 1716 it uses the Paris Observatory for the meridian, it is not directly copied from that map. The legend lower right describes how the city is divided into three parts; the City, the Town and the University. There are 23 important buildings keyed to the map. It is derived more from that of Nicolas de Fer who in 1717 issued his own revised plan. Seutter (1678-c.1757) was apprenticed to Johann Baptiste Homann in Nuremburg before returning to his native Augsburg. He quickly became the main competitor to Homann. He married 3 times and had 13 children, but it was his son-in-law Tobias Lotter (1717-77) who continued the firm following his death.
