A William Smellie translation of George Louis Leclerc Buffon’s great work of Natural History here specifically on the bird volumes. A FINE EXAMPLE. Smellie was a member of the Antiquarian and Royal Societies of Edinburgh. The images in this nine volume work are derived from the Paris edition of 1770-83. Provenance: from the Library of Sir Richard Johnstone Bart., with bookplate. Not in Anker; Nissen Zoology 719.
