Robert Whitworth’s large two sheet panorama of Manchester was announced in the ‘London Evening Post’ for 3 June 1729. It stated that it was printed for him and ‘sold only by’ him, in Manchester. The earliest state of the print found includes also the imprints of the London map and print sellers Overton and Hoole. It is found listed in their catalogue of 1734. By 1736 it was in the hands of John Bowles in whose catalogue of that year it may be found. The prospect is engraved by John Harris and dedicated to Ann Lady Dowager Bland, Lady of the ‘Mannor’ of Manchester. She built St. Ann’s Church listed in the key below as no. 16. Hyde ‘Gilded Scenes and Shining Prospects’ no. 31; Lee, J ‘Maps and Plans of Manchester and Salford’ no. 3.
