Herman Moll was a Dutchman who settled in England by 1678. His contributions to the cartographic world over the ensuing decades were considerable. This map is from the ‘A New Description of England and Wales’, an English County Atlas published in 1724. That same year the maps also appeared as ‘A Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales’. The maps most distinguishing features are the decorative antiquities which surround the map but what is little known is that for the ‘Geography of England and Wales’ published in 1747 they were removed. The last edition of Moll’s atlas was only recently discovered and is entitled ‘The Traveller’s Companion’ which was published by John Bowles. It has been dated to c.1775-80 and includes many new roads drawn from the latest surveys of Emanuel Bowen. Only one example of the atlas is known and this loose map of the county of Kent is of the same state. It is therefore ONE OF ONLY TWO EXAMPLES RECORDED.
