A composite map by Abraham Ortelius from the ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’. The map is focused on the Greek island of Crete which bears two tables below. One identifies the major towns, the other is a list of uncertain locations and people. The source is given as Francesco Superanti (Soranzo). Classical sources are given as Strabo, Athenaeus, Diodorus Siculus and Heraclides. The insets across the top are of Corsica, the Ionian Islands of Corfu, St. Maura, Ithaca, Cephalonia and Zante again with classical sources given. Lastly is a map of Sardinia with a list of uncertain places and a number of classical sources. This example is from the 1624 edition of the ‘Parergon’ by Balthasar Moretus. Van den Broecke, M. #217; Zacharakis, C. #1621.
