This separately published broadsheet illustrates the fierce and daring Dutch raid on the Medway where they fired on the English Fleet laid up and inflicted arguably the worst naval defeat in English history. No less than 15 ships were destroyed and of the remaining eight three were set alight. King Charles’ flagship the ‘Royal Charles’ was captured and taken to Holland. This occurred during the second Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-67. It features depicts the battle at Fort Sheerness with the Dutch and English fleets in the distance. There is extensive Dutch text below keyed to the print documenting the events of the battle which ran from June 19th to 23rd, 1667.
