This beautiful English map is both rare and important. Samuel Purchas was a collector, theologian and author and this map is found in his ‘Purchas His Pilgrimes .…’ Purchas recorded it as being copied from a large Chinese map captured by the English merchant John Saris at Bantam. It is widely considered the first European map to be derived from Chinese sources. Squares and circles depict cities and settlements. The province boundaries are shown, for perhaps the first time on a Western map, and Macao and Canton (Guangzhou) are named. With the title in both English and Chinese characters. At sides are a portraits of the famous Jesuit Matteo Ricci and of two costumed figures of a man and woman. The map would be copied by Theodore De Bry, 1628, and Alvarez Semedo, 1655.
