Chusan Island now known as Zhoushan Island lies in the mouth of the Yangtse River just offshore from the city of Shanghai. During the first Opium War with the British 1839-41 the British occupied Chusan in August of 1840. The British immediately set about surveying the waters nearby. This survey was published on 18 June the following year. The Nanking Treaty ending the war agreed to the opening of trade to China and British occupation of Hong Kong in exchange for the return of Chusan Island. This chart centres on the main town and harbour of the island and features great detail of the town.
