The first issue of one of a series of charts published around the time of the Opium Wars. This one features the city of Nanking (Nankin) after which the Treaty of 1842 was named. The British forces agreed to leave Nanking in the terms of the treaty. The chart shows the stretch of the Yangtse River upriver and down stream to the town of Zhenjiang (Tching Kiang-foo). An inset centres on the Kiang See region.
