From the English edition of D’Anville’s 10-sheet map of Tibet, first published in 1737. It was the work of Jean Baptiste du Halde a Jesuit priest and confessor to Louis XIV. Although he never visited China he diligently collected the Jesuit reports sent back and compiled a four volume work. This particular map extends from Tibet in the south east to the Caspian Sea in the north west. Shirley BL T.Hald 1a.
