Benedetto Bordone’s “Libro” is designed like a traditional Isolario of the day, as a collection of maps of islands. This particular map is of the Canary and Cape Verde Islands shown off the coast of Africa. A fine example in early wash colour. Armstrong in ‘Imago Mundi’ no. 48 pp. 65-92; Broekema “Maps of the Canary Islands” in Map Collectors’ Circle 74 no. 27 pl. v; Karrow pp. 89-93; Shirley Atlases in the BL T.Bord 1a no. 23.
BORDONE, Benedetto
