When Lewis Evans published his map of the Middle Colonies in America in 1755 it had an immediate impact. Despite asking Governor Pownell to act as an agent for a London edition it was quickly pirated. This example was first separately published by John Bowles which interestingly appears to lack any imprint identify himself. This second state bears a title now enclosed in an ornamental cartouche and the imprint of John and Carington Bowles whose partnership ended in 1763.
