FIRST EDITION. Henry Bouquet (1719?-65) was born in Switzerland and a Cadet in the military. Whilst with the Dutch Swiss Guards he was recruited for the Royal American Regiment in 1755. Following Colonel Bouquet’s successful expedition to relieve Fort Pitt at the beginning of the Pontiac War, he travelled into the Ohio territory as far as the Muskingum River. He was able to end the hostilities without any further major conflicts and managed to win the release of about 300 hostages from the Delaware and Shawnee tribes. A reign of terror which had befallen the western frontier finally ended. Bouquet had earned a reputation for acquiring the necessary skills for warfare in the wilderness. The lasting effect was to open up the Ohio Valley to English expansion and settlement. The London edition was accompanied by a folding map after Thomas Hutchins which was in two halves. Bouquet developed a fever in September 1765 and died. William Smith wrote this work based on Bouquet’s own notes and journals.
