The firm of Van Keulen was founded around 1680 with the publication of the ‘Zee Atlas’. The multi volume ‘Zee Fakkel’ followed soon after. Descending through the family the business came in to the hands of Gerard Hulst van Keulen in 1778. He set about a period of rapid activity which saw a whole new quantity of extremely detailed but unfortunately extremely rare sea charts. This is an example of one of those charts dated 1798 issued just before his death in 1801. The chart shows in great detail the east coast of England from Kent through Essex and Suffolk and includes all the approaches to the Thames Estuary. Koeman IV p. 392 no. 424.
