A very rare separately published map of the county of Essex with CARTOGRAPHERS ANNOTATIONS for a new issue. First issued in 1799 the map was one of a handful that Nathaniel Coltman produced for the publishers Laurie and Whittle, mostly of southern counties. Little information could be found about these maps beyond that written in Kingsley’s fine carto-bibliography of Sussex maps. That map was issued and corrected through to 1827 and included a state dated 1807. The map of Kent by Coltman is known in later states with the addition of Railway’s, these are published by Laurie & Whittle’s successor R. H. Laurie. An example of the Essex dated 1807 is recorded in the British Library.
This example is covered with manuscript additions most probably at the hand of the publisher R. H. Laurie or the cartographer. The date 1807 is altered twice to 1850! New roads are marked around Woodford and through Epping Forest, these are highlighted in writing the margins. The Northern and Eastern Railway, Eastern Union Railway and North Kent Railway with branches are all added. All their respective stations are also marked. The cartouche is altered with a desire to remove the frame and re-word it. Below is pasted on a manuscript list of “Places of Election” and “Polling Places”. Refer Kingsley Sussex 59.
