First edition first issue of an important map. Following the competition of Willem Blaeu who set about offering his own terrestrial atlas Henricus Hondius and his partner Jan Jansson set about revising their atlas which had not been done for over 25 years. Although dated 1630 the maps first atlas issue is in the French edition of the ‘Appendice’, 1633. It is regarded as the finest example of this second Dutch cartographic style. It exemplifies Dutch pride in its command of the seas by displaying images of the cartographers Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius along with those of Julius Caeser and Claudius Ptolemy. It is one of only a handful of printed maps to depict Australia issued to 1630 and the first to be issued in a world atlas. Van der Krogt, P. (Atlantes) 0001:1C.1; Shirley, R.W. (World) #336, state 1, pl. 256.
