One of the early proposed routes for a Panama Canal to allow easier shipping between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Lionel Gisbourn was a British engineer who surveyed the Isthmus of Darien with the intention of building a canal connecting the two coasts. This map is found in ‘The Isthmus of Darien in 1852: Journal of the Expedition of Inquiry for the Junction of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans’. The final canal was built further north.
