Giovanni Battista Ramusio (1485-1557) was a historian and geographer in Venice. He would become Secretary to the Council of Ten in Venice and a translator. He taught Giacomo Gastaldi’s son cosmography and published a collection of travels in 1550 in a single volume containing just one map. A second edition appeared 1554-59 in which the number of maps was expanded to eight woodcuts. There are later editions of this work but for these a new series of blocks had to be cut so those from the first edition are more desirable. This birds-eye view of Cusco in Peru is from the first edition. Karrow “Mapmakers” pp. 227-9; Shirley “Atlases in the British Library” G.Ramu-1a no. 4.
